Failing to plan is the same as planning to fail. You would not go into battle without a battle plan. In the same way, you wouldn’t take on the challenge of quitting smoking without a plan. Here is some advice for developing a plan to successfully quit smoking, that works for you.

Pick a day of personal significance. Many people pick New Years Day. This day has some significance to everyone because it is the beginning of a new calender year and many people pick this to start the year off on the right foot. Although it is no different from the last, it feels different. You don’t have to, nor should you, wait until the end of the year to quit. Pick something closer like a birthday, anniversary, or some other day special to you. Having this day will make your quit day seem more momentous and increase your chances of success.

After you pick the day, take a piece of paper and write down all the reason you want to quit smoking. Make sure you include all of the health, family, financial, and other reason you have. Write as neat and clear as possible. Then carry that piece of paper around with you everywhere for a reminder when the quitting gets tough.

Find a supportive product you are comfortable with. Much of your quitting is pure will power because there is no product out there that can actually make you stop smoking, but many that can make quitting easier. There are very effective natural products like Quit Tea, pharmaceutical products like bupropion and Chantix, also many types of nicotine replacement products. It is important to have some type of support, something to give you the confidence that you can do this.

Begin an exercise routine and stick to it. Some form of exercise everyday is important to improve your health, increase your energy, and deal with the increased stress that goes with nicotine withdrawal. If you only walk for 30 minutes a day that is great. Running, biking, swimming, lifting weights, or yoga are all wonderful and extremely beneficial as well. If there is a gym near by, take the money you would normally spend on cigarettes and join the gym. If you spend $4 a day on cigarettes you could join a really nice gym for $120 a month.

Tell everyone you are going to quit smoking, and find a support buddy. When you talk about something convincingly enough, you start to convince yourself. As you begin talking about anything, that thing starts to manifest itself. So talk about quitting smoking to everyone you meet. Also, the buddy is important. Make sure you find someone in your life that is supportive of your decision, a non-smoker (obviously), and available to chat with you anytime for the next couple months.

The night before your quit day do a thorough check of your house, car, office, and anywhere else you might be, and throw out anything that has to do with smoking. This is very, very important. Gather up your cigarettes, matches, lighters, ash trays, papers, pipes, cigars, bongs, tobacco pouches… whatever you might have around, and ceremoniously throw them in the trash. Maybe dump something disgusting on them to make sure you don’t dig these items out the next day.

Then finally on quit day, and for the next few weeks, make sure you are good to yourself. Buy yourself a funny box set of a t.v. show you have been wanting to watch, and watch an episode everyday. You are doing something difficult, you need to reward yourself.

For over fifty years now the government and healthcare agencies have been warning us of the dangers of smoking. Despite this call to action, smoking remains prevalent in over 20% of our population. Everyone from high school dropouts to sophisticated corporate movers and shakers with MBAs from Harvard School of Business smoke. Even professional athletes and doctors have been known to smoke. So what will it take to convince people that smoking is something so bad that they should finally just lay them down and quit?

Please consider the following list as an outline for an argument against those who think the ill-effects of smoking are just made-up diatribe used to take a person’s right away from them.

1. Lung Cancer

An estimated 90% of all lung cancer is related to smoking. One would think, that should be enough to convince someone to stop smoking. But many may hear this message for the first time after they’ve already smoked for 40 years. They may think they are past the point of stopping smoking. However, studies have shown a reduced risk for lung cancer when people stop smoking. For those who quit smoking for 10 years, the risk is 30-50% less than current smokers. Also, if you have quit for 15 years, the risk may be 80-90% less than current smokers.

2. Cardiovascular

A literature review found a reduction of coronary heart disease risk by 36% in people who had stopped smoking.This is a slightly better risk reduction for the heart than is seen with other heart disease interventions such as taking cholesterol lowering medications or aspirin. So, for those who smoke and take a statin drug, why not lower your risk another 30% or so and stop smoking?

3. Lung Disease

Studies also show the progression of lung disease (COPD/emphysema) is slowed after someone stops smoking. The earlier the smoker quits, the less damage they’ll have. This translates to a better quality of life with less dependence on medications and therapy. This would include using inhalers, nebulizers, oxygen and perhaps even non-invasive ventilation (CPAP). The key here is the debilitating lifestyle seen in people who suffer from COPD. Often they do not leave their house, rely on others for activities of daily living like bathing, cooking, etc. Interestingly, for those who smoke and cough a lot, former smokers also report less coughing and phlegm (mucous) after one year.

4. Pregnancy

Nicotine has extremely negative affects on the baby as it is easily transmitted through the mother’s bloodstream. It is also carried in the breast milk of a nursing mom. Their unborn child gets the best stop smoking benefit. Women who smoke typically have lower birth-weight babies (less than 5.5 lbs), and those babies are 2-3 times more likely to die from SIDS than babies born to non-smokers. When babies are born too early, they may be developmentally and physically challenged. Finally, smoking can double your risk for bleeding too much during delivery. This puts both you and your baby at risk.

5. Oral Hygiene

Everybody wants that Hollywood smile; perfectly white teeth, healthy gums and a winning set of chompers. Isn’t life great when you don’t have to worry about your teeth. Who dreads going to the dentist when they know a lot of work has to be done? I know I do. Well, smoking can have tremendous affects on periodontal health. Oral lesions can quickly turn cancerous if not detected early. Oral cancer is a growing concern for many dental professionals and has become a priority for the American Academy of Periodontology. Smoking also worsens tooth decay and periodontal disease, as well as, causes stains and offensive breath. Treatment plans that involve periodontal surgery are exacerbated by the slow healing times found in smokers. Luckily, smoking and other tobacco cessation results in immediate oral health benefits, such as reduction in oral cancer rates and periodontal disease.

Here are just 5 benefits to stop smoking. We haven’t even touched on the many other benefits. In fact, we have 66 reasons to stop smoking listed on our website for those who are still not convinced.

Don’t be a statistic, get the stop smoking help you need to make the best decision of your life. Find information on all the stop smoking aids, how to stop withdrawal cravings and maybe even find other resources that will help you to finally stop smoking.

There has been a lot written about the side effects of quitting smoking. These side effects come about because when you quit smoking, your body goes through a process of detoxification. It is looking to get rid of all the poisons that you have been putting into your body from cigarette smoke for all your smoking years.

As you read through this article you will find out the side effects when you decide to quit smoking. But they are meaningless unless you have something to compare it to. That is always what we do with information. We compare it to other things that we know or learn. And in that comparison we then make decisions on what to do. So I’ve included some important additional information for comparison.

Some of the common nicotine withdrawal symptoms are:

* Irritability
* Anxiety
* Difficulty concentrating
* Insomnia
* Restlessness
* Increased appetite

Irritability – Have you ever watched a little baby fidget and then get cranky and then start to have a fit? What did mom do? As you watched her she gave the baby a pacifier and the baby calmed right down didn’t they?

Cigarettes have become your adult pacifier. And when that pacifier is taken away from you, you’ll probably become cranky too. It’s only a passing phase. Because you are an adult now you can use knowledge to eliminate that response totally. Those who use hypnosis to quit smoking usually don’t experience irritability because they’re feeling so happy to be free of cigarettes.

Anxiety is the result of being in unfamiliar territory. You don’t know what to expect. Things that are familiar are safe. And you can understand that when you’ve spent so long smoking, it’s become familiar and safe to you. The irony is that smoking isn’t safe at all. It’s like driving a car at 100 MPH. It’s just the illusion of safety that you’ve developed.

Difficulty concentrating is the result of nicotine leaving your body. The good news is that nicotine is leaving your body rapidly. And it’s as if there’s a little man inside of you jumping up and down yelling that nicotine supplies are running low and you need to replenish. So this is just a distraction that causes a temporary loss of focus. This symptom doesn’t have to have an effect on you. I’ll tell you how to avoid it further down in this article.

I believe that insomnia results from loss of safety. When you’re not safe the protective part of you doesn’t allow you to sleep so that you can be ready for any dangers that might pop up. Your safety pacifier has been taken away and it might take a little bit of time to adjust. Only if you don’t know how to avoid this withdrawal effect completely, that is.

Restlessness. Now this is funny. Smokers are far more restless than other people. Every time you see a smoker you know you’re seeing a very nervous person. Someone who doesn’t know what to do with themselves when they want to relax, or be by themselves. If they aren’t being active, most likely they need a cigarette. So when they put away the cigarettes for good, all that restlessness comes out to play. It’s now time for them to learn what that feeling is from and how to take care of it. And this too can be totally avoided and I’ll show you how in just a bit.

And finally we come to increased appetite. Nicotine is a stimulant. It speeds up metabolism, it suppresses appetite, it deadens the taste buds and your sense of smell. When you stop smoking you might also have a need to put something into your mouth. You can certainly find something other than food and tobacco to occupy your mouth can’t you?

All of these side effects can be avoided or lessened by using hypnosis to quit smoking. Because not everyone experiences withdrawal side effects when they quit. And if one of us can stop smoking without withdrawals then all of us can. And using hypnosis to quit smoking can help you to be free of smoking without withdrawals and side effects.

Now compare those minor withdrawal symptoms with one of the side effects of smoking. DEATH. Smoking causes:

* 90% of all lung cancer deaths in men
* 80% of all lung cancer deaths in women
* 90% of deaths from chronic obstructive lung disease

So next time you think about quitting and you’re dissuaded by the thought of withdrawal symptoms, start to think about the consequences of not quitting.

Here’s the way you can avoid the withdrawal symptoms I promised you. You probably know that hypnosis to quit smoking can help you avoid nicotine withdrawal altogether. I also mentioned comparison is why we store information in the first place. Using the comparison of smoking to not smoking is how you can avoid withdrawal from smoking. Hypnosis makes it quick and dramatic, but you can program yourself for success just by focusing on what you are gaining now that you’ve decided to quit and not on what you are losing.

And I invite you to learn how to use hypnosis to quit smoking for free. All the information you need to regain control is in my free ebook, stop smoking hypnotherapy. There are techniques that could help you to use self hypnosis to stop smoking on your own. It’s available at HypnoticState.com. It’s the same information that was published in the book I co-wrote, Real World Hypnosis, Insider Tips From Leading Hypnotists, that’s for sale on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and other booksellers.

Anyone who has ever smoked has tried to quit at some time or another. When you try to quit, you do have some options. You can try nicotine replacement therapy, inhalers, and even going cold turkey. Here we will talk about each method separately.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy

Most well known aids out on the market today are your nicotine replacement therapy products or (NRT’s). These would be your nicotine patches, gums, and lozenges. NRTs replace the nicotine you would be getting from smoking, dipping, chewing, and take out the dangerous additives in the tobacco you would have used.

The nicotine in the NRT’s lowers the withdrawal side effects, such as anxiety, restlessness, fatigue, irritability, and excessive eating. Clearly there are some benefits to NRT’s. If you are interested in using NRT’s seek out medical advice. Learn of the possible side effects and make informed decisions for yourself.

Nicotine Inhalers and Nasal Sprays

A couple more aids are nicotine inhalers and nasal spray. Nicotine inhaler is like an asthma inhaler. It has a mouthpiece and shoots an aerosol of nicotine in your mouth. A couple of side effects might be hiccups and a dry mouth. Report this to your health professional if things get worse.

The nicotine inhaler has reportedly been shown to be as effective as the NRTs. Nicotine Nasal Spray, of course, you spray in your nose. Once it gets to your mucous membrane, it gets absorbed very quickly. With these, you also need to speak with your doctor, get cleared to use them, and make good decisions about usage.

Quitting Cold Turkey

For those who want to go cold turkey, you can find a few things that help, but not many. I went with gum, grit, determination, and an unbreakable will that almost drove me to insanity but I digress.

I seen this new thing called the electronic cigarette. It’s an electronic device that seems to give you the feeling of smoking a real cigarette. I have not tried it, but some people swear by it.

Choosing to Quit

The main ingredient in quitting smoking is a definite decision to quit. No products or aid is going to do it all for you. There must be a 100 percent commitment to the process of quitting smoking once and for all. No aid in the world is going to do it for you, although they can help. Good luck and I hope you quit smoking.

The major cause of primary carcinoma of the lung or lung cancer is smoking. Tobacco also is solely responsible for cancer of the bladder, pancreas and kidney. Both men and women are equally vulnerable to lung cancer. There are around 32% of men and 25% women who die from cancer every year. Around 90% per cent of lung cancer patients are cigarette smokers. Those men who smoke one packet of cigarettes a day increase their risks of lung cancer by around 10 per cent compared to those who do not smoke. The signs of lung cancer involve chronic cough, persistent cough, chest pain, coughing of blood, an increase in mucous production, noisy breathing or wheezing, shortness of breath, bronchitis, hoarseness, pneumonia weight loss and loss of appetite. If you are a smoker or have been a smoker for many years you have a high risk of cancer however you can also suffer some other associated lung problems. So the longer you smoke the greater risk you have of lung cancer.

Once you stop smoking you greatly minimize the risk of not only lung cancer but also other associated smoking related diseases like heart stroke, emphysema and chronic bronchitis. The development of lung cancer takes a number of years and the disease peaks at around the age of 55 to 65 years of age. There are changes in the lung the moment you are exposed to carcinogenic chemicals. Soon after exposure to smoking begins, there are a few abnormal cells that may appear in the lining of the bronchi that are the main breathing tubes in the human body. When increased exposure to these substances there are more abnormal cells that appear and some become cancerous and they form tumors. When you stop smoking the abnormal cells are replaced by the normal cells and your risk levels of getting lung cancer falls drastically.

The only solution to lung cancer is to quit smoking and if you are a non smoker you can help your friends to stop smoking. You can go for alternate therapy treatments like acupuncture, laser therapy and other therapies. The best way to quit smoking is to adopt the aversion therapy that is a natural way to quit smoking. You should be cautious and careful. There are many natural methods and you can also join an anti smoking club that can help to kick the smoking habit with others. Quitting smoking is a challenge and you must be focused and mentally prepared. It is not an easy task and you should be disciplined and not give in to cravings at all. You have to be very strong and committed and choose an approach that you will be comfortable with. For teenagers there is a word of caution, if you are experimenting on smoking you should stop it right now! Smoking has no benefits whatsoever and so you should be careful not to be misguided by peers. It is better to lead a healthy life by being a non-smoker than a life that is resigned to ailments and cancer if you are a smoker!

Michael Martin, when announcing his unyielding ban on smoking, asserted Ireland was the first country to initiate such extensive actions to interdict tobacco. Like other claims he made, he was utterly wrong.

History has suffered bans and prohibitions of smoking tobacco instilled by tyrants and totalitarian dictatorships, all of which have entered and exited in due course. Even before Ireland’s suppressive smoking statutes, the populace of Europe suffered the no smoking laws of the infamous Third Reich, first introduced by decree of the Nazi’s in the late thirties.

Strangely, alongside his oft related stories of atrocities and horrendous behavior, Adolph Hitler was emotionally involved in a nationwide ban on tobacco. As head of the powerful Nazi party, he prohibited the use of tobacco in German post offices, universities, Nazi offices and military hospitals. The ruling, founded in 1941, was based on findings by the Institute for Tobacco Hazards Exploration.

A passionate anti smoker, Hitler crusaded against tobacco and spoke often for the cause of anti-smoking. He used his personal funds to sponsor research of the perils of smoking tobacco. Little wonder, given the nature of his regime, it supported the premise that smoking was evil and should be avoided by the Aryan race. It is amazing that much of the study carried out during this dreadful period of history make up the rationale claimed today by those trying to obtain stringent and oppressive bans on smoking. In a moment of explosion, for which he was well known, the Fuehrer declared that tobacco was “the wrath of the Red Man against the White Man”

The Bureau Against the Dangers of Alcohol and Tobacco penned the stringent ban on tobacco in 1939. Following in 1942, the faux Institute for the Struggle Against the Dangers of Tobacco, wrote an even stronger statement. The Nazi’s first conceived the encompassing term, “passive smoking,” to describe second hand smoke. This oppressive system of government imposed on the people of Germany a set of extensive rules, regulations and restrictions, far more than any nation had seen before. Hitler himself took particular interest in this area and, quite often, personally oversaw the drafting and implementation of anti smoking guidelines..

Toward the end of the twentieth century, scientists and researchers noticed that second hand smoke, resulting from smoking tobacco, was a growing danger. As a recourse, advertising for tobacco in both air and print media, began with “courteously making aware” campaigns to retain the customer base. In spite of harsh and severe punishment, even death, for anyone disregarding posted bans on smoking, smokers are still around and thriving. Bans on smoking have often stalled or disappeared entirely throughout eons, even though such bans multiplied rapidly after prohibition of alcohol failed in America.

Bans and restrictions toward smoking tobacco and consuming alcohol were not looked on with support by the now-developing industrial world in the nineteenth century. In the United States, however, at the end of the century, movements of moral crusaders were outraged by alcohol and tobacco consumption. The people of America were beginning to demand definitive action be taken by both federal and state lawmakers and enforcers. This fervor peaked in 1920 with a constitutional amendment to the American constitution, allowing the prohibition of alcohol.

American believed that the new prohibition would be best “for their own good” and, at first, hesitantly accepted it. They quickly became freed from illusion and resented the oppressive restrictions. Rich and powerfully placed conspired together with those of the underworld in a doomed effort to keep alcohol flowing. Bars where alcoholic beverages are sold illegally, “speakeasies,” and hip flasks became the symbol of utter defiance.

Bans on smoking, now effective in some fifteen states, parallel the sales of cigarettes. By 1927, however, the state of Kansas decided to end its ban on cigarette sales. Except for having crusaders feel good, the Eighteenth Amendment, making the sale, manufacture and transportation of alcoholic beverage illegal, was not really that effective. Apparently, an attempt to social engineering may lead to disastrous outcomes. Prohibition was eventually lifted in 1933. However, the same scenario will not apply to the ban of smoking because of the “second hand” considerations.

In the United States, laws have been passed that are designed to specify particular areas for cigarette smokers. In 1975, Minnesota became the first State to prohibit smoking by the general population. The Minnesota Clean Indoor Act, requiring certain restaurants to provide their customers with non-smoking areas. However, bars were excluded from this law. San Luis Obispo, a California community, was the first to ban all smoking in restaurants, bars and other indoor facilities. Passed in 1990, the San Luis Obispo law was the first of its kind.

In today’s hectic world, it seems like the entire globe has chosen to ban the use of tobacco or is seriously considering such a plan. But, unfortunately, the most serious threat to health, second hand smoke or “passive smoking” has not been addressed by any bans. Ban Smoking
